Burundi president promises to step down in 2020

Burundian President Pierre Nkurunziza said in a surprise announcement that he will not run in the 2020 elections, in spite of a recent referendum allowing longer term limits. Nkurunziza made the announcement some two weeks after a large majority of Burundians voted “yes” in a referendum on presidential term limits that could allow Nkurunziza to stay in power until 2034.

The East African nation’s constitution previously allowed leaders to serve two five-year terms.
